How Is Your American Dream?
Financial advisor Sobhi Baghdadi is grateful for the freedoms that many of us take for granted. His vision of the American dream is now a reality.
Since I immigrated to the United States seven years ago, I have never started a day without FaceTiming my parents overseas for at least five minutes. It’s a joyful morning routine that is dear to my heart.
During a recent call, one of my parents asked me a question that triggered a mental and verbal audit: “How is your American dream?” Here’s how I answered:
“Hmm. My American dream. Well, I am happy, content and at peace with my inner self. I have food, fresh air, and a 24-hour grocery store next to where I live. I drink fresh tap water and I have electricity. I have 911 access, police department, fire department and health workers who are ready to help me without checking my race, religion or political thoughts. I have my career at a company where I believe in its mission and vision. Co-workers who are friends and best friends who I laugh, cry and vent with. Co-workers who I share with the same passion. You know, I have a flag that I keep so close to my heart. I have 4th of July every year to celebrate my freedom. A freedom that cannot be bought or sold. So, to answer your question, my American dream is going very strong and is so much alive. What is better than belonging to the land of the free and the home of the brave?”
Like any parents, I could tell that seeing me happy makes them happy.
Ten years ago, I was that freshly graduated guy watching the unrest and protests around him, reading about the three branches of American government, fascinated by the Supreme Court history and separation of power. And here I am today a very proud tax payer!
It is truly amazing to read about the American dream and then be able to live it every day. Reality starts with a dream.
